Risk Management for NPOs
Foreseeing and planning to mitigate as many problems as possible, is vital for the sustainability and smooth running of non-profits, schools and faith-based entities. Managing risk encompasses the identification, evaluation and prioritisation of potential risks, followed by coordinated application of resources to minimise, monitor and control the probability or impact of unfortunate events. Risk management also often includes maximising the realisation of opportunities.
Sadly, in too many non-profits, where staff and volunteers are focused on service delivery and resource mobilisation, they seldom highlight risks – let alone how they will deal with just those that they can think of. And very rarely are scenarios such as pandemics or the suspension of major funders’ support considered.
Failing to identify and plan risk mitigation measures often, sadly, means the closure of organisations.
